Christmas Wreath Ideas for Your Front Door

October 17, 2026Updated October 17, 2026 7 min read

From classic red and green to buffalo check, snowmen, and rose gold, here are Christmas wreath ideas that make your front door feel ready for the holidays.

Christmas is one of my favorite times to decorate a front door.

A wreath is often the first decoration guests notice when they arrive, and it can make your whole entrance feel ready for the holidays.

But Christmas wreaths have come a long way from a simple green wreath with a red bow.

You can go traditional, playful, farmhouse, elegant, or completely different with winter blues and silver.

If you’re looking for Christmas wreath ideas, here are some of my favorite styles, along with handmade examples from Russell Wreaths.

1. Classic Red, Green, and White Christmas Wreaths

You really can’t go wrong with traditional Christmas colors.

Red, green, and white work beautifully together, especially when you combine different ribbon patterns, a full bow, and a Merry Christmas sign.

I like this style because it feels festive without needing a lot of extra decorations around the door.

2. Buffalo Check and Farmhouse Christmas Wreaths

Buffalo check is one of those patterns that looks right at home during Christmas.

Red and black plaid, burlap, wood-look signs, and textured ribbon give a wreath that cozy farmhouse feel.

These designs work especially well if your porch already has rustic decorations, wooden signs, or lanterns.

And farmhouse doesn’t have to mean simple. A full deco mesh wreath with buffalo check ribbon can make quite a statement.

3. Santa Christmas Wreaths

Santa wreaths bring a little fun to your front door.

I especially like designs where Santa becomes part of the wreath instead of just another small decoration tucked into the ribbon.

A playful Santa wreath can be the main attraction on your porch, especially if you have children or grandchildren visiting.

Add a few simple decorations nearby and let Santa do the rest.

4. Snowman Christmas Wreaths

Snowmen are another favorite because they feel cheerful without being limited to traditional red and green.

A snowman wreath can include buffalo check, winter greenery, snowflakes, or colorful ribbon.

It’s also a fun choice if you like decorations that feel a little more like winter than Christmas alone.

5. Candy Cane and Peppermint Wreaths

If you love bright Christmas colors, candy cane wreaths are worth a look.

Red and white stripes, peppermint patterns, and green accents give these designs a playful holiday feel.

They’re especially fun on dark-colored doors, where the red and white really stand out.

I like pairing this style with a simple doormat or a few candy cane decorations rather than filling the entire porch.

6. Colorful and Whimsical Christmas Wreaths

Some Christmas wreaths are meant to be bold.

Lots of ribbon, bright colors, playful patterns, and a big holiday message can make your front door feel like a celebration.

This is a great choice if you enjoy decorating for Christmas and want your wreath to be one of the main features.

The trick is to let the wreath stand out without making the rest of the porch compete with it.

7. Blue, White, and Silver Winter Wreaths

Christmas doesn’t always have to be red and green.

Blue, white, and silver can create a beautiful snowy look, even if you live somewhere that rarely sees snow.

Here in Texas, that’s usually the closest I’m getting to a white Christmas!

I like these colors because they feel fresh and peaceful.

They’re also a nice option if you want to leave your wreath up after Christmas and enjoy it through part of January.

Two handmade examples are our Let It Snow Blue and White Snowflake Wreath and Blue, Beige, and Silver Snowflake Winter Wreath.

8. Elegant Rose Gold Christmas Wreaths

If you prefer a softer, more polished Christmas look, metallic colors can be beautiful.

Rose gold, champagne, cream, and silver offer something different from the traditional holiday palette.

I especially like metallic wreaths on black, dark green, or deep wood-colored doors.

The contrast helps the lighter colors and shiny accents stand out.

9. Rustic Burlap and Holly Door Decorations

Sometimes you want something that feels more natural.

Burlap, holly, greenery, pinecones, and simple Christmas messages can create that look without a lot of bright colors.

And you don’t have to stick with a round wreath.

A taller door hanger can be a fun alternative if you want something different.

Our 40-inch Joy Burlap Door Hanger With Holly is an example of that style.

Just remember to check the finished width and height before choosing a taller design for your door.

10. Matching Christmas Wreaths for Double Front Doors

If you have double front doors, matching wreaths are one of the easiest ways to make the entrance feel complete.

Two wreaths with the same colors, decorations, and finished size create a balanced look.

You can also use coordinating wreaths, but I’d keep their overall size and style similar.

Our Double Door Snowman Christmas Wreaths are sold as a set of two, making them an easy starting point.

How to Choose Your Favorite Christmas Wreath Style

With so many options, I think the easiest place to start is with the look you want your front door to have.

Do you want something traditional and cozy?

Something bright and playful?

Or a softer winter look that can stay up after Christmas?

Once you know the style, it’s easier to narrow down your choices.

You can also look at the decorations you already own. If your porch has red plaid pillows and rustic lanterns, a farmhouse wreath might fit right in.

If you have silver and white decorations, a winter-blue or metallic wreath could bring everything together.

And remember, your wreath doesn’t have to match every decoration perfectly. Sometimes repeating just a couple of colors is enough.

What About Wreath Size, Door Color, and Timing?

Those details matter, but I don’t want to turn a list of Christmas wreath ideas into a measuring lesson.

Our Christmas Wreath Buying Guide covers how to choose the right size, match a wreath to your door color, and decide when to put it up.

If you need help measuring, you can also read How to Measure Your Door for Wreath Size Before You Buy.

A Christmas wreath doesn’t have to stay on the front door. Homes & Gardens has a large roundup of Christmas wreath ideas, including some unexpected places to hang one, like in front of a mirror.

A Quick Note About Christmas Lights

A few lights can make a Christmas porch look beautiful after dark.

If you’re adding lights around your wreath, choose products rated for the location where they’ll be used, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and inspect the wires before decorating.

I also prefer battery-operated flameless candles in porch lanterns rather than open flames near ribbon, mesh, and other wreath materials.

Want a Christmas Wreath Made Just for You?

Sometimes you know exactly what you want, but you can’t find it in the shop.

Maybe you’re looking for a certain color combination, a personalized sign, or a wreath that coordinates with your Christmas decorations.

That’s where a custom wreath can be a great option.

Tell me what you have in mind, and we can discuss the design, materials, availability, and pricing.

Christmas is a busy season for handmade wreaths, so I recommend reaching out early if you have a specific design in mind.

One of my favorite things about handmade Christmas wreaths is how different they can be.

Some are traditional. Some are playful. Some are full of color, and others are a little more understated.
